James Stevenson

Dr. James Stevenson is Vice President and Research Lead for Coal, Metals & Mining at OPIS - part of Dow Jones. His expertise comprises supply-demand and price dynamics of the steel and electricity markets and their various feedstocks: coal, iron ore, manganese, chrome, ferroalloys, ferrous scrap, natural gas/LNG, hydrogen, and carbon. He also has extensive experience in trading of coal, natural gas, and power, as well as being experienced in M&A and business development. Prior to his current role, Dr. Stevenson spent six years in commodity trading at Mercuria, Louis Dreyfus, and Eraring Energy. Dr. Stevenson holds undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Sydney in Australia, and a PhD from Yale University.

Decarbonization Pathways for Industrial Sectors

Industry plays a crucial role in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, especially in hard-to-abate sectors such as cement, steel, chemicals, and pulp & paper, and has been advancing in the adoption of sustainable solutions in its production processes. The transition to low-carbon production processes requires investments in energy efficiency, technological innovation, circular economy, and solutions such as electrification, green hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage (CCS). This panel will discuss pathways to accelerate industrial decarbonization, the infrastructure and financing requirements, as well as the role of public policies, corporate commitments, and carbon markets in supporting this transformation.
