Summit Agenda SP+Verde will include carbon offsetting and a Zero Waste operation

The event will feature actions aimed at minimizing negative impacts and initiatives to enhance positive impacts

São Paulo, October 31, 2025 – Sustainability will be a cross-cutting theme in all actions of the Summit Agenda SP+Verde, an international pre-COP event promoted by the Government of São Paulo, in partnership with the City of São Paulo and the University of São Paulo (USP). Each stage of the organization was planned to reduce environmental impacts and expand positive results, with emphasis on the full compensation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the adoption of the Zero Waste methodology in waste management.

The event will feature a space dedicated to the circular economy, a model that seeks to extend the life cycle of products and materials through reduction, reuse and recycling. Unlike the linear model — extract, produce and discard — the circular economy transforms waste into inputs for new products, reconciling environmental preservation, innovation and economic development.

The Circularity Hub will bring together practical activities, panels, and learning experiences on waste reduction, redesign of production systems, and resource reuse. Two workshops will be offered to the public: one on composting and another on urban gardens, demonstrating the practical application of circularity principles in everyday life.

The Summit will also have an area for collecting electronic waste, such as cell phones, laptops, cables, and headphones. The collected material will be converted into 1,024 native seedlings of the Atlantic Forest, in an action coordinated by the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation, contributing to the recovery of one of the most threatened biomes in the country.

At the Gastronomic Fair, producers from the coast and the metropolitan region will present edible flowers, spices, and regional dishes. The space will feature workshops and activities on food reuse and regenerative cooking, conducted by the Jardins Comestíveis collective, which will also address home composting techniques.

“The event consolidates innovative and circular practices for a greener and more resilient São Paulo. We will have concrete sustainability actions that reaffirm the State Government’s commitment to the regeneration of the planet,” highlights Natália Resende, Secretary of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics (Semil).

Carbon Offsetting

In partnership with the Solví Group, all greenhouse gas emissions generated by the event will be offset by carbon credits from the Caieiras Sanitary Landfill, the largest in Latin America. The emissions calculation includes participant travel, energy consumption, water use, and waste generation.

The landfill converts biogas from waste decomposition into clean energy and biomethane, preventing the release of methane — a gas with a global warming potential 28 times greater than CO₂. Since 2006, the unit has certified 9.6 million carbon credits. During the Summit, the public will be able to learn about the process on a guided tour, scheduled for November 5th.

The event will also feature a “Recycling Meter,” an electronic panel that will display, in real time, the amount of recyclable waste collected during the two days of programming.

Waste Management – Zero Waste Operation

The complete management of solid waste from the Summit will be carried out by CICLO – Intelligent Services and Sustainability Consulting, following the National Solid Waste Policy and the Zero Waste methodology. The operation aims to minimize the amount of waste sent to landfills, prioritizing recycling, composting, and reuse.

The public will find identified bins for separating recyclables, organics, and rejects. All materials will be tracked, weighed, and disposed of transparently. Recyclables will go to cooperatives, organics will be composted, and only the non-recoverable fraction will be sent to a licensed landfill.

The event will receive the Zero Waste seal, granted by Global Zero Waste, in recognition of good waste management and circularity practices — consolidating the Summit Agenda SP+Verde as a benchmark for sustainable events in Brazil.

Circular Economy of Electronics

In partnership with Circular Brain, the Summit launches the campaign “From Discard to Regeneration: your electronics will become a forest”. Attendees can hand in old or unused electronic equipment at collection points located at the event entrance. All the material will be converted into the planting of 1,024 native seedlings of the Atlantic Forest, in partnership with the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation, reinforcing the role of technology in environmental regeneration and promoting the responsible disposal of electronic waste.

Conscious Consumption and Clean Energy

All participants will receive a reusable Eco Cup as an incentive to reduce disposable items. Collective hydration points will be distributed in strategic areas, offering free and accessible water to the public.

The event’s generators will use biodiesel, a renewable and low-carbon fuel, significantly reducing air pollution associated with large events.

“Everything in São Paulo happens on a large scale — and every step towards a more sustainable city has a significant impact, potentially inspiring other metropolises. Initiatives such as the implementation of the electric bus fleet, the expansion of green coverage, selective waste collection, and incentives for agriculture and sustainable tourism in the South Zone contribute to a more balanced and inclusive city. In a year of COP 30 in Brazil, São Paulo assumes a strategic role in debates on urban resilience, health, urban planning, sanitation, and decarbonization. Therefore, events like the Summit Agenda SP+Verde are fundamental to promoting awareness, engagement, and new partnerships in favor of a more sustainable future, aiming at the quality of life of the population entrusted to us,” highlighted the Secretary of International Relations, Angela Gandra.

About the Event

The SP+Verde Agenda Summit is an international pre-COP event promoted by the Government of São Paulo, the City of São Paulo, and USP (University of São Paulo). The meeting will bring together experts, leaders, and representatives of society to discuss sustainable development and the green economy.

The structure will be set up in Villa-Lobos Park, with five stages, a business roundtable, an innovation area, the House of Circularity, a gastronomic space, and cultural attractions.

The debates will be organized into four thematic axes: Green Finance, Resilience and the Future of Cities, Climate Justice and Sociobiodiversity, and Energy Transition and Decarbonization. A circular economy track will connect all stages and extend to the House of Circular Economy, with experiences and workshops curated by the Circular Movement.

In the innovation area, universities and technological institutes will discuss the role of research and technology in the climate transformation of São Paulo. On the main stage, the green economy will be the focus of discussions, with the presence of political leaders and national and international guests.

The Summit is the result of a broad mobilization for sustainable development and is sponsored by Cosan, Comgás, Edge, Rumo, Sabesp, Itaú, Amazon, Votorantim Cimentos, EcoUrbis, Solví, Loga, Motiva, EDP, Veolia, CPFL Energia, Metrô, Stellantis, Ecovias, Toyota, JHSF, Tetra Pak, Aena, Scania, AstraZeneca, Weq and Bracell; In addition to institutional support from Fiesp, Senai, Única, Aesabesp, Abrainc, Secovi-SP, Associação Comercial de São Paulo, Pateo 76, Abiogás, SP Águas, Cetesb, DER-SP, Fundação Florestal, Arsesp, SPTrans, Prefeitura de Campinas, B3, The Nature Conservancy, CEBDS, Pacto Global, SOS Mata Atlântica, Movimento Circular, União BR, Circular Brain, CET-SP, Dia da Terra, Instituto de Conservação Costeira, Inovaclima, IPT, Zeros, Ideia Sustentável, Kearney, Instituto Baccarelli, Zero Summit, Parque Villa-Lobos, NEOOH, Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) and Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation (RCGI).
