Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability – Challenges and Opportunities

The expansion of artificial intelligence heralds a new era of efficiency and innovation, but also imposes a growing challenge: the high energy and environmental costs of the digital systems that sustain this revolution. Data centers, data mining, and the training of large AI models consume expressive volumes of energy and natural resources, pressuring global decarbonization targets. This panel discusses how governments, corporations (or companies), and researchers can align artificial intelligence with the principles of sustainability — through green infrastructure, computational efficiency, ethical governance, and the use of clean energy. The future of AI depends on its capacity to think, yes — but to think sustainably.

Energy Transition and Decarbonization Stage

Energy Efficiency and Public Policy: Pathways to Reducing Costs and Emissions

São Paulo is the first Brazilian state to establish a comprehensive Energy Plan, with energy efficiency as one of its key strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and optimize resource use. This panel will discuss São Paulo’s case studies—such as the Energy Efficiency Guarantee Fund and the pilot project for efficient public lighting implemented in the city of Miracatu—as model initiatives. The conversation will also explore technical, regulatory, and economic challenges, as well as the role of public policies, incentives, and financing mechanisms in scaling up energy efficiency projects.

Sustainable Pathways: The Largest Collaborative Reforestation Case of the Atlantic Forest

Forest restoration is one of the most effective strategies for climate adaptation and biodiversity conservation. In this panel, we will explore and discuss the ARR Corridors of Life project, which recreates ecological corridors in the Atlantic Forest, connecting forest fragments in the Pontal do Paranapanema region. The initiative demonstrates how uniting companies, government, and civil society can generate positive impacts on climate, health, and socioeconomic development.

The Osesp Chorus

The Osesp Chorus (Coro da Osesp), in addition to its versatile symphonic work with the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, emphasizes the recording and dissemination of music from the 20th and 21st centuries and of Brazilian composers. Highlights in its extensive discography include Canções do Brasil (Biscoito Fino, 2010), Aylton Escobar: Obras para coro (Selo Digital Osesp, 2013), and Heitor Villa-Lobos: Choral transcriptions (Naxos, 2019). The Chorus is resident at Sala São Paulo, where it performs its own concert series, and frequently appears at other venues in the capital and the interior of São Paulo State. In 2020, the Chorus sang, under the baton of Marin Alsop, at the opening of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland—a feat repeated in 2021 in a virtual film that also featured Yo-Yo Ma and artists from seven countries. Alongside Osesp, it debuted at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2022, performing in the venue's official subscription series and in the highly praised spectacle Floresta Villa-Lobos. Founded in 1994 by Aylton Escobar, it has been an artistic body of Osesp since 2000, completing 30 years of activity in 2024. Its past coordinators and conductors included Naomi Munakata [1995-2015] and Valentina Peleggi [2017-2019]. Since February 2025, Thomas Blunt has served as its Principal Conductor, and since April 2025, Kaique Stumpf has been its Resident Conductor.
